Somalia customs to operate inside Kenya: (KN).

Published: 4 April 2009

In a new twist, Somalia new government will levy taxes on Kenya exports to Somalia inside Kenya, the deal signed by Kenyan foreign minister Moses Watangula dictates that Somali government should appoint custom officials who will be based in major entry and exit points in Kenya to Somalia.

This includes Jomo Kenyatta international airport, Wilson Airport, Mombasa’s Kilindidi Harbour and all major border exits to Somalia.

The levied taxes will go to Somali government in order to strengthen its security forces and to weaken what Kenya described as warlords who they said use the taxed money to weaken the government.

If Kenya is not referring to the Islamic administrations in place in most parts of Somalia, KN understands no warlords operating in Somalia that Kenya can weaken.

Besides that its not clear how Kenya will ensure to cut the income of those they refer as warlords by only imposing taxes to the commodities inside Kenya and without having no control over when the same commodities arrives in Somalia.  It will be simply double-taxation in which no one knows who benefits from.

Kenya exports Somalia mostly Kat, the stimulus necrotic drug, and the referred Islamic administration will be very much happy to see it stopped at all, as it’s religiously forbidden; this is contrary to Kenya’s thinking that they only interest taxes.
